kairaranga – New Zealand weaver

beyond proud

I’ve been invited to participate in an exhibition, mainly as a guide, sometimes a cleaner!

we are prepping for Matariki

the organiser’s are a group of beginner weavers I taught a couple of semesters ago

it’s interesting to me that prior to the course none of the 13 odd women had ever crossed paths, but by the end of it they were a cohesive unit, working together, teaching workshops and now creating their own exhibition in a bona fide gallery

it seems, that mahi raranga is the whatu that binds the whakapapa

in everyday terms that means, our weaving work is what gathers us and holds us together

it’s a powerful force for good, a living, breathing entity that comes alive through the shared practice of a set of principles as ancient as time – well, as ancient as people anyway

we’re really lucky to have it and we aim to ensure it’s around forever
